CBSE Issues Clarification On Class 12 Result 2026 Row, Re-Evaluation Process To Start From May 19
The Central Board of Secondary Education has issued an official clarification after students and parents raised concerns over unexpectedly low marks in Class 12 board exams. CBSE defended its On-Screen Marking system and announced that the re-evaluation process will begin from May 19.
Central Board of Secondary Education has issued an official statement regarding the controversy surrounding the Class 12 Result 2026 and the board’s digital evaluation process.
The clarification comes after several students, parents and teachers questioned the marking system on social media, especially after many candidates reported unexpectedly low scores in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
Some students also claimed they had qualified competitive examinations like Joint Entrance Examination but failed in CBSE board examinations, triggering widespread debate online.
Defending the evaluation process, CBSE stated that its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system was introduced to ensure greater transparency, fairness and consistency during assessment. According to the board, the digital system helps examiners award step-wise marks accurately while reducing the chances of manual errors.
CBSE said the OSM process allows evaluators to check answer sheets digitally under monitored conditions, making the marking process more standardised across centres.
The board also highlighted that students must secure at least 33 per cent marks separately in both theory and practical examinations to pass a subject, as per existing CBSE rules.
This year, the overall Class 12 pass percentage dropped to 85.2 per cent, making it the lowest performance recorded in the last seven years. The decline in results has led to concern among students and parents across the country.
Meanwhile, CBSE has announced that the re-evaluation process for Class 12 results will begin from May 19, 2026. Students who are dissatisfied with their marks will first need to apply for photocopies of their evaluated answer sheets.
After reviewing the answer copies, students can apply for verification of marks or request re-evaluation of specific answers. The board has advised students to complete the process within the official deadlines and pay the required application fees.
CBSE further stated that corrective action would be taken if any discrepancy is found during re-evaluation.
The board also clarified that students who fail in one subject may still become eligible for compartment examinations, depending on whether they meet other pass criteria conditions.
CBSE is expected to release the detailed schedule and fee structure for the re-evaluation process soon on its official website.
