India’s T20 leadership debate has intensified after reports claimed selectors are unhappy with Suryakumar Yadav’s form and captaincy, while young batter Tilak Varma is emerging as a strong future option.

Team India could soon witness another major leadership change in T20 Internationals, with reports suggesting that current captain Suryakumar Yadav’s future is under serious threat after a poor run of form.

According to reports quoting senior BCCI sources, the national selection committee is no longer fully convinced about Suryakumar’s place in the T20 side, either as captain or even as a specialist batter. The final call on his future is now believed to depend heavily on head coach Gautam Gambhir, who reportedly continues to back the Mumbai Indians star.

Suryakumar endured a disappointing IPL 2026 season, scoring only 210 runs in 12 innings at an average below 18. Reports claim selectors are increasingly focused on preparing a younger core for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where T20 cricket is expected to feature.

A senior BCCI source reportedly said that even inexperienced pacers have started troubling Suryakumar with hard-length bowling, leading selectors to question whether he fits into India’s long-term plans.

The uncertainty has sparked fresh discussions over India’s next T20 captain. While names like Shreyas IyerSanju Samson and Shubman Gill remain in contention, a surprising new candidate has now entered the race, Tilak Varma.

The young left-handed batter has reportedly gained strong support within influential cricket circles. Selectors are said to be closely monitoring his leadership skills after appointing him captain for the upcoming Tri-Nation A Series.

A BCCI source reportedly stated that Tilak should not be ruled out if Suryakumar is removed from captaincy, adding that there is a specific reason why selectors have handed him leadership responsibilities at the developmental level.

Tilak Varma has already impressed with his performances in T20 internationals. In 49 matches for India, he has scored 1,389 runs at an average of 44.81 and a strike rate above 145, including two centuries and six half-centuries.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is once again being viewed as a strong leadership candidate after another successful IPL campaign with Gujarat Titans. Gill was previously considered India’s long-term all-format captain before a dip in form temporarily slowed those plans.

Reports also suggest that if Suryakumar is eventually dropped from the side, India’s think tank could explore a fresh top-order combination featuring Gill, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan.

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also reportedly entered long-term discussions, with selectors believed to be preparing him for the future Olympic cycle.

Despite growing pressure, Suryakumar’s fate may ultimately depend on whether Gautam Gambhir still believes the experienced batter deserves another opportunity to revive his form and leadership. The coming months could play a crucial role in shaping India’s next T20 era.
