Pune, June 15, 2026: In a major enforcement drive, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe led surprise inspections at hotels, food stalls, and commercial establishments in Pune’s busy Swargate area on Saturday, triggering concern among local vendors.
According to sources, a special FDA team arrived at the Swargate Police Station between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. before launching a surprise inspection campaign with police support in and around the Swargate bus terminal area.
Food Quality and Hygiene Under Scrutiny
During the operation, officials inspected the quality of food items, storage conditions, hygiene standards, and licensing compliance at several hotels, eateries, and food outlets. The team reportedly found instances of poor sanitation and violations of food safety regulations at multiple establishments.
Businesses found violating norms were issued strict warnings and directed to immediately rectify deficiencies.
Orders Issued to Non-Compliant Establishments
Shops and food outlets where serious irregularities were detected were instructed to undertake immediate cleaning and sanitation measures. FDA officials reportedly ordered some establishments not to resume operations until their premises and surrounding areas were thoroughly cleaned and brought into compliance with hygiene standards.
In certain cases, vendors were reportedly asked to vacate or clear their premises until corrective measures were completed.
Crackdown Sends Strong Message to Food Businesses
Since taking charge as FDA Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe has adopted an aggressive stance against adulterated food products, illegal gutkha trade, and food businesses operating in violation of regulations across Maharashtra.
The Swargate inspection drive has created a ripple effect among food business operators in Pune, prompting many establishments to review their hygiene practices and regulatory compliance. Officials indicated that similar inspections may continue in other parts of the city as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety standards and protect public health.
