Over 87,000 Indians Gave Up Citizenship in 2023, External Minister Jaishankar Informs Lok Sabha

During the second day of the Monsoon session in the Indian Parliament, Dr. S Jaishankar, the Indian External Affairs Minister, addressed the lower house Lok Sabha, providing significant information on the trends of Indian citizenship renunciations. According to a report, as of June this year, a total of 87,026 Indians have given up their citizenship.
In response to a written query in Lok Sabha, Minister Jaishankar disclosed that since 2011, a staggering 1,750,000 individuals have relinquished their Indian citizenship. The data laid out by the minister offers a comprehensive breakdown of the number of citizens who have given up their Indian nationality over the years.
The figures presented are as follows:
In 2022, 225,620 Indians renounced their citizenship, while in 2021, the number stood at 163,370.
In 2020, there were 85,256 renunciations, followed by 144,017 in 2019, 134,561 in 2018, 133,049 in 2017, 141,603 in 2016, 131,489 in 2015, 129,328 in 2014, 131,405 in 2013, 120,923 in 2012, and 122,819 in 2011.
During his address, Minister Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to fostering a stronger people-to-people connection and deeper engagement with the Indian diaspora, positioning it as a significant priority in India’s foreign policy. The efforts in this direction have been spearheaded by Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, promoting closer ties with Indians residing abroad and maintaining strong diplomatic bonds with the global Indian community.
