Starting this Friday, the Pune Expressway will launch an AI-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), the first of its kind in Maharashtra. This innovative system utilizes artificial intelligence and data analytics to enhance traffic flow and road safety. With the ability to automatically detect various traffic violations, it promises a more efficient driving experience for commuters.

The RTO will oversee the system from a control room in Lonavala. A standout feature of the ITMS is its capacity to automatically read vehicle number plates, allowing the police to issue e-challans for traffic offenses. This automated process is designed to discourage violators and ensure swift enforcement of traffic rules. Additionally, the system will promptly identify and report disabled vehicles, reducing prolonged traffic congestion. Currently, the delayed response to such incidents can inconvenience motorists with significant delays.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a vital transportation corridor, sees around 40,000 vehicles daily, spiking to 60,000 on weekends. To efficiently handle this high traffic volume, the ITMS will utilize over 200 AI-powered CCTV cameras placed on gantries along the 95-kilometer expressway stretch. These sophisticated cameras can identify up to 17 various traffic violations, enabling thorough enforcement and surveillance.
