A Reddit post has gained significant attention, inquiring about the challenges faced by NRIs in their potential return to India. The question posed was, “Indians abroad—what’s stopping you from returning to India?”

This inquiry quickly went viral, attracting numerous comments where individuals shared their perspectives.

“We’ve seen threads where people have outlined what they miss about India when living abroad – conveniences, house help, family, festivals, cheaper cost of living, and more. These are true for the most part. So for those who’ve settled abroad – what’s stopping you from returning,” this is the inquiry raised by a Reddit user.

The post has garnered considerable attention on Reddit, accumulating over 1,500 upvotes and igniting a diverse array of opinions among users.

The comments were quite intriguing. A significant number expressed their intention not to return to India, while others indicated a desire to come back, stating that their time abroad is primarily for financial stability.

The post by the user also pointed out the inadequacies in India’s infrastructure. He posted below his question that the superior infrastructure found in other countries is particularly attractive. Additionally, many emphasized that foreigners often exhibit a greater sense of civic responsibility compared to Indians.

The issue of safety was also highlighted in the post, with the user noting that their residential area experiences fewer criminal activities. This aspect can be particularly significant for families with young children, as mentioned in the comment.

Here are some of the points that the post included:

“I’m in the UK and these are the reasons that stop me from returning:

I pay high taxes but get good infrastructure, libraries, well maintained neighbourhoods, fairly good public services such as health and education, in return

Really good work life balance (I’m aware that this isn’t the case for everyone)

Judgement free society and for the most part people are genuine.

Very low crime rate especially where I live. With young children in family, I find this to be important.”

People responded extensively.

“People have to live according to the old tradition and society otherwise be ready to get sidelined by the parents or your own family/relatives. In 2024, things like love marriage, inter-cast marriage are still a big taboo. Although people understand that there is nothing wrong in this (and are open to new perspectives) but it is difficult for them to support it in front of the society.

“Taxes in India are meant to exploit. In west, people pay heavy tax but at-least they have world class public services. Government services in India is a scam, you cannot use them. Even the people who use it (schools, hospitals, transportation, etc.), give them the worst experience of their lifetime. Paying tax in India is like funding the biggest scams and you cannot do anything about it, even though you know it. Paying tax always feels bad, when you have paid GST on almost all the services,”
