In a groundbreaking development, the railway administration is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) for managing bed sheets, blankets, and other linen provided to passengers. This initiative, to be launched at the boot laundry in Ghorpadi, Pune, represents a pioneering step in the country’s railway system. The new system aims to address longstanding issues with unclean linen and enhance passenger comfort.

Currently, passengers traveling in air-conditioned coaches often encounter issues with untidy bed sheets, pillows, and napkins, leading to frequent complaints. To tackle this problem, the AI system will employ advanced cameras to inspect linen after washing and before drying. Items failing to meet cleanliness standards will be discarded and sent for re-washing. A special siren will alert staff to any linen that does not pass the AI checks, ensuring immediate corrective action.

Ram Bargappa, PRO for Pune Division Railways, confirmed that this plan will soon be inaugurated and implemented on an experimental basis specifically for Pune. The AI-driven approach is currently undergoing testing, with full implementation expected shortly. The system will process up to 20,000 bed sheets, pillows, and napkins daily, with AI inspecting six bed sheets per minute. The laundry has a washing capacity of 8 tonnes per day, and the AI system will provide clean linen for 15 trains departing from Pune.

The introduction of AI is anticipated to significantly reduce passenger complaints regarding dirty linen. The Pune division currently receives about 150 complaints daily, with issues including untidy cabins, poor-quality linen, and lack of water in toilets. By addressing these problems with advanced technology, the railway administration aims to improve overall passenger satisfaction and comfort.

This initiative underscores the railway administration’s commitment to enhancing passenger experiences through innovative solutions. As the AI system becomes fully operational, passengers can expect cleaner, higher-quality linen, transforming their travel experience into a more pleasant and hygienic one. The use of AI in this context sets a new standard for railway linen management in the country and highlights a proactive approach to resolving persistent issues.
