Mumbai, September 29 : Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to take over all the five airports at Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv, Yavatmal and Baramati in the state which were given to a private company on lease.

Presiding over a meeting held at Mantralaya on Wednesday to review the works of the airports being developed by MIDC, he expressed that no air services could be started at these places in last 14 years and emphasised on starting air services in small cities of the state in order to reduce burden on metropolitan airports.

He said that infrastructural facilities should be built where space is available for the airport.

Pawar gave instructions to increase frequency of air services at some places where they are up and running.

He also directed to extend runways at some airports and introduce night landing facilities at some places.

This will not only help in reducing the problem of traffic jams but also facilitate citizens to travel by air at affordable prices, he added.
