Akshay Kumar Leads Fitness Push in Pune as MP Sports Festival Concludes with Record Participation
Pune witnessed an energetic and inspiring culmination of the first MP Sports Festival on Thursday as Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar delivered a strong message on fitness, discipline, and the importance of sports in shaping a healthier generation. The closing ceremony, held at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch, drew thousands of young athletes, parents, and sports veterans, marking a grand conclusion to a festival that saw participation from more than 44,000 sportspersons across the city.
The event, conceptualised under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting nationwide fitness and sporting culture, also served as a moment of celebration for over 4,000 winners who were felicitated on stage. Akshay Kumar, known for his commitment to health and physical discipline, made an energetic entry by cycling from the venue’s main gate to the dais before being greeted with an image of Bharat Mata.
Highlighting the growing disconnect between children and physical activity, the actor urged families to encourage sports from a young age.
“Good health is the foundation of everything we do, and staying fit is the most reliable way to protect that health,” Akshay said, noting his delight that nearly 44,000 students participated across various sports. However, he emphasized that many children still prefer staying indoors, absorbed in screens and video games.
“I want to appeal to those kids—step outside, pick a sport, stay active. Fitness is the biggest gift you can give yourself,” he urged.
Looking ahead, the actor expressed hope that the next edition of the festival would break its own records.
“This year’s participation was fantastic, but let’s aim for one lakh players next time. Everyone dreams of success—but achieving that success while staying healthy, that is what truly matters,” he added.
The ceremony brought together an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, RSS Provincial Organizer Dr. Pravin Dabdaghav, international shooter and Khel Ratna awardee Anjali Bhagwat, along with several MPs, MLAs, Olympians, and celebrated athletes such as Rekha Bhide, Manoj Pingale, Umesh Zirpe, Nitin Kirtane, Kedar Jadhav, and others.
MP and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, who organized the Pune Khasdar Krida Mahotsav, affirmed that building a strong sporting culture is crucial for a strong nation. “A developed India must have physical strength at its core. That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Fit India and encouraged sports festivals across the country,” he said.
He shared that competitions were conducted across 37 sports and 29 venues, thanking all players and organizations for their overwhelming support.
“Pune has always been a powerhouse of sportsmanship. Through these competitions, we want to strengthen that legacy. From among these participants will rise tomorrow’s champions—future Anjali Bhagwats and Shantaram Jadhavs. You are leading Pune today, and one day, you will lead Maharashtra and the nation,” he added.
Minister Chandrakant Patil echoed the sentiment, recalling that since 2014, the Prime Minister has encouraged festivals dedicated to art, sports, agriculture, and innovation. “This festival received a tremendous response, and it reflects how ready our youth are to embrace sports,” he said.
Akshay Kumar also took a moment to appreciate the parents behind the young athletes. “My gratitude goes first to the parents—they are the real backbone. My father always told me: wake up early, sleep early, and live with discipline. I still follow those words. Good health isn’t optional—it’s essential,” he shared.
The first MP Sports Festival proved to be more than just a series of matches—it became a celebration of community, determination, and youth ambition. With thousands of participants, hundreds of winners, and an atmosphere charged with encouragement, the festival laid strong groundwork for a vibrant sporting future.
