New reports suggest Apple could split its iPhone launches, pushing the standard iPhone 18 to 2027 while prioritising premium and foldable models.

Apple fans expecting the iPhone 18 to arrive in 2026 may be in for an unexpected surprise. According to MacRumors recent reports, Apple is considering a major shift in its long-standing iPhone launch strategy, which could delay the sale of the standard iPhone 18 until 2027.

If this plan is implemented, it would mark a significant departure from Apple’s traditional annual replacement cycle, where each new iPhone model typically goes on sale roughly a year after its predecessor. Reports suggest that instead of launching the entire iPhone 18 lineup together, Apple may stagger its releases across two major events.

As per the reports, Apple is likely to focus on launching only high-end devices later this year. These could include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s much-rumoured first foldable iPhone. The regular iPhone 18, along with models such as the iPhone 18e and the second-generation iPhone Air, may then be introduced separately in early 2027.

If this happens, the iPhone 17 would become the longest-selling standard iPhone model in Apple’s history, remaining on the market for around 18 months. Until now, a similar gap was seen only once, when the iPhone 4s launched about 15 months after the iPhone 4. Observers say this would be the first time Apple deliberately extends the lifespan of a regular iPhone model on such a scale.

One major reason behind this possible change is Apple’s expanding iPhone portfolio. Over the past year, the company has added new variants such as the iPhone “e” series and the iPhone Air, which is positioned closer to the Pro lineup in pricing and features. With a foldable iPhone also expected to debut, Apple could soon have as many as eight iPhone models on sale at the same time. Staggering launches would allow each device more breathing room in the market and reduce internal competition between models.

Another key factor could be Apple’s upcoming hardware changes. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 series may use a next-generation 2-nanometre processor, which is expected to be more expensive to manufacture. Delaying the standard iPhone 18 could help Apple manage costs and pricing pressures. Design changes are also rumoured, including a smaller camera bump, a reduced Dynamic Island, and Face ID sensors moving under the display.

Industry watchers also believe Apple wants to keep the spotlight firmly on its most premium devices. By launching the foldable iPhone and Pro models separately, Apple can dedicate its marketing push to high-margin products without the regular iPhone diluting attention.

However, this strategy carries risks. A longer wait for the standard iPhone could push some buyers to either upgrade early to a more expensive Pro model or postpone purchases altogether. Analysts note that while premium devices may benefit, budget-conscious customers could feel left out.

For now, Apple has made no official announcement. But if these reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 may arrive much later than expected, signalling one of the biggest shifts in Apple’s iPhone launch history.
