Apple’s Made-in-India Initiative Expected to Generate 600,000 Jobs, 70% for Women: Report
Apple Inc.’s push to manufacture iPhone Pro models in India is expected to create a significant economic impact, with projections indicating the creation of up to 600,000 jobs. According to a report by the Economic Times on August 27, the Cupertino-based tech giant’s shift from China to India could result in a surge of employment through its local manufacturing ecosystem.
The report, which cites government projections, suggests that Apple is likely to create around 200,000 direct jobs by the end of the current financial year. Significantly, over 70 percent of these positions are expected to be filled by women. The ripple effect of this expansion could be substantial, as each direct job is estimated to create at least three indirect jobs, potentially translating to between 500,000 to 600,000 jobs overall.
Bloomberg News reported on August 20 that Apple has started training thousands of workers at its factory in Tamil Nadu to manufacture the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models. The goal is to produce these devices as close to their global debut as possible, signaling a major step in Apple’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in India.
In addition, Apple is reportedly set to assemble its high-end iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in India for the first time through its partner, Foxconn Technology Group. Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu will begin the new product introduction (NPI) process for these Pro models, eventually moving into the mass production stage. This marks a significant shift in Apple’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing base outside of China.
Apple has already announced its special event for the launch of the iPhone 16 series, scheduled for September 9. The event, which comes with the tagline “It’s Glowtime,” is expected to unveil four new models of the iPhone 16, including the Pro and Pro Max versions.
According to data submitted by Apple and its suppliers to the Indian government, the company’s workforce in India will include 200,000 direct jobs by the end of March, with a strong emphasis on hiring women. This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on China and invest more heavily in India as a key manufacturing hub.
As Apple continues to expand its operations in India, the company’s efforts are expected to provide a substantial boost to the local economy, driving growth and creating new opportunities for thousands of workers across the country.
