In a groundbreaking endeavor, India is attempting to synchronize the launch of sea and spacecraft, sending humans to the ocean floor and into space simultaneously. The Samudrayan project, led by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is making strides in this ambitious pursuit.

By the end of this year, harbor testing will be conducted, with a submarine carrying three people to a depth of five to ten meters. Next year, the submarine will dive to 500 meters, and in 2026, it will reach an unprecedented 6000 meters, announced Secretary M Ravichandran.

“We are working towards achieving the same timing of sea and spacecraft launches, a feat that has never been attempted before,” said Ravichandran. “This project will help us explore the ocean and space together, paving the way for new discoveries.”

In a related development, the India Meteorological Department, in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization, has launched a training program for weather forecasters. The month-long program focuses on enhancing forecasting skills, with participants from 15 countries, including India.

“Analysis, communication, and team effort are crucial for weather forecasters,” emphasized Dr. Ramachandran. “Human intelligence plays a key role in this, along with data analysis. We need to gain the trust of the people and explain complex weather phenomena in simple terms.”

The training program aims to bridge capability gaps and improve forecasting accuracy, using advanced methodologies, data, and technology. “This training will focus on making smart meteorologists,” said Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department.

As climate change continues to impact the planet, India is pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration, from the ocean floor to space. With initiatives like Samudrayan and the forecaster training program, India is poised to make significant contributions to the global scientific community
