Apple-1 Computer Built by Steve Jobs Sells for Rs 2.6 Crore at Rare Tech Auction
A rare Apple-1 computer, one of the first personal computers sold by Apple, recently fetched $315,914 (approximately Rs 2.6 crore) at an auction organized by Boston-based RR Auction. The Apple-1, originally built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, was restored to full working condition before being sold. This historic computer was gifted by the company’s founders to Dana Redington, Apple’s first applications engineer.
Interestingly, Steve Jobs was reportedly about to discard this Apple-1 computer board along with other items while moving offices back in 1978. The Apple-1 holds a significant place in Apple’s history, as Jobs sold 50 units to Paul Terrell, the owner of the Byte Shop, a personal computer retail store. The revenue from that sale was crucial for Apple’s early growth, helping to launch the company’s manufacturing efforts.
The auction also featured other rare Apple memorabilia. Polaroid photographs of the Apple-1 prototype, which Jobs included in his presentation to Terrell, sold for $54,904. The prototype itself had previously sold for $677,000 two years ago.
Additional items auctioned off included an Apple Lisa-1 computer with original ‘Twiggy’ drives for $81,251, a first-generation Apple iPhone for $25,460, a first-generation Apple iPad prototype for $24,996, and checks signed by Steve Jobs, which fetched $66,844.
In total, the auction achieved $983,096 in sales, highlighting the enduring interest in Apple’s early technology and the legacy of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in the tech world.
