The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, successfully hosted IMPACT 2024 conference cum workshop, from September 20-22, 2024. Organized by the Medical Journal Armed Forces India (MJAFI), one of India’s oldest multi-specialty research journals, the event commemorated the journal’s 80th year of publication.  Over the decades, MJAFI has grown into a prestigious, well-indexed journal, attracting research submissions globally and boasting a cite score of 3.4.

The conference was inaugurated by Lt Gen Sandeep Thareja, SM, VSM**, Director and Commandant of AFMC.  He highlighted the importance of mastering medical writing and reviewing, particularly in light of new guidelines that mandate a minimum number of publications for teaching roles. He also stressed the need for adaptation to digital platforms in this modern era.

Maj. Gen. Giriraj Singh, Dean and Deputy Commandant of AFMC, also graced the event.  Among the distinguished speakers were:-

• Dr. Sanjay Mehandale, Director of Research, PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Center, Mumbai

• Dr. Sanjay Pai, Consultant Pathologist and Director, World Association of Medical Editors

• Dr. Prathap Tharyan, Adjunct Professor, Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Christian Medical College, Vellore

• Dr. Shoibal Mukherjee, Director, Medical Research, Medanta Hospitals

• Maj. Gen. J. Debnath, Commandant, Command Hospital (Central Command)

• Maj. Gen. Manas Chatterjee, VSM, Additional DGAFMS E&S

The three-day event featured interactive sessions led by distinguished faculty, covering contemporary issues in medical publishing. Workshops focused on study design, medical writing, peer review, and biostatistics to help budding authors refine their skills. Key discussions also addressed modern challenges such as plagiarism and the threat posed by predatory journals.

IMPACT 2024 attracted around 60 delegates from across India, including budding authors, reviewers, and editors eager to contribute to the future of successful medical publishing.
