Baner, Balewadi Residents to Receive 18 Crore Litres of Water Following Minister Chandrakant Patil’s Efforts
Pune: A water storage tank has been approved for the Baner and Balewadi areas, resolving a long-pending issue through persistent efforts by Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil. The completion of the tank has ensured an ample supply of 18 crore litres of water, greatly benefiting the residents.
Over the past two decades, rapid population growth in the Kothrud, Baner, Balewadi, and Pashan areas had created an urgent need for a sustainable drinking water supply. To address this, Baner and Balewadi were included in a pilot water supply scheme modeled after Nagpur’s system. Under this initiative, three storage tanks and a five-kilometer-long water pipeline were completed, ensuring the area’s water requirements are met.
Speaking on the occasion, Patil stated, “The groundbreaking of the Sus-Mhalunge Water Supply Scheme and the completion of the main pipeline and storage tanks under the Equal Water Supply Project have been significant milestones. I am pleased that we have successfully resolved Kothrud’s drinking water issues.”
Focus on Clean Rivers and Enhanced Water Availability
Additionally, the state government has initiated a ₹1,900 crore Mula-Mutha River Purification Project, which aims to clean the rivers and increase water availability. This initiative emphasizes water conservation and reuse.
The Baner-Balewadi Water Supply Scheme is not just crucial for Kothrud but holds significance for Pune as a whole. According to Patil, the government is committed to ensuring equitable water distribution across all sections of society, from bungalows and housing societies to middle-class communities and slum areas. Under the Equal Water Supply Policy, 85 tanks will be constructed, and treated water from 18 sewage treatment plants funded by a ₹2,000 crore JICA project will be reused. This treated water will be supplied to industries, ensuring more potable water for citizens.
Patil added, “Our aim is to ensure that no one is deprived of drinking water, and through this policy, we are working towards a sustainable and inclusive future.”
