Bangladesh May Face ICC Punishment for ‘Unacceptable’ Conduct During India Test
Bangladesh started strong in their first Test match against India in Chennai, but by the end of the first day, they were in a bit of trouble. They managed to reduce India’s score to 34 for 3 and later 144 for 6, but a great partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket helped India recover. By the end of the day, India finished at 339 for 6, with Ashwin not out at 102 and Jadeja at 86.
While Bangladesh’s grip on the match slipped, there’s a bigger issue at hand since they fell short of their bowling target by 10 overs, even after getting a half-hour extension. This could lead to penalties from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Their situation worsens as they were already docked three World Test Championship points and fined 15% of their match fee last month for being three overs short in their first Test against Pakistan.
In the current match against India, Bangladesh only managed to bowl 80 overs throughout the day, with 23 overs in the first session, 25 in the second, and 32 in the final session on Day 1.
Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle expressed his frustration on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “Bangladesh will have bowled less than 80 overs in spite of the extra half hour added on. It has to be unacceptable.” According to article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, “A team will have one (1) World Test Championship competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage.”
