Beware of Cash On Delivery Scam: How Fraudsters Trap Families With Fake Parcels
Unordered COD packages are being used to trick people into making quick doorstep payments
A new financial fraud known as the Cash on Delivery (COD) scam is spreading rapidly across the country, with fraudsters targeting households through fake parcel deliveries.
In this scam, a courier arrives at a home or office with a parcel that the recipient did not order. The delivery agent informs the person that it is a COD shipment and asks for payment. Many people assume that someone else in the family or a colleague may have placed the order and pay the amount without verifying. However, when the parcel is opened later, it often contains a stone, waste paper or a low-value item.
By that time, the money has already been transferred and recovery becomes difficult.
How the scam works
Fraudsters book a parcel in the victim’s name and address with a fixed COD amount. The courier agent, who is unaware of the contents, collects the payment as per standard delivery procedure. Once the payment is made, the courier company transfers the amount to the sender’s account.
In some cases, scammers even call or send a message in advance claiming that a parcel is on the way or that a gift has arrived from abroad and only delivery charges need to be paid. This creates a sense of urgency and trust.

Why it is dangerous
Unlike many digital payment frauds, COD payments made in cash or through instant transfer at the doorstep often do not have chargeback protection. People make quick decisions under social pressure while the courier waits at the door. The relatively small amount involved also makes victims less cautious.
How scammers get personal details
Personal information such as name, address and phone number may be sourced from data leaks, hacked e-commerce platforms, public listings or compromised seller accounts. Stolen customer databases are then used to send fake parcels in the victim’s name.
What to do if you have paid
If you realise that the parcel was fraudulent, act immediately. Contact the courier company’s customer support and file a complaint using the tracking or airway bill number. If the payment settlement is still in process, it may be possible to place it on hold.
In India, victims can also file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal. Early reporting improves the chances of investigation and possible recovery.
Disclaimer: Readers are advised to verify COD deliveries before making payments. In case of suspected fraud, report immediately to the concerned authorities or cyber crime helpline.
