The outbreak of COVID19 has triggered social, economical and cultural lifestyle changes.
The recent lockdown rules issued by the government of India, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation clearly underlines the importance of cycling as a means of social distancing. In view of World Bicycle Day, which was observed on June 3, we spoke to some cycle enthusiasts. Shaantanu Prabhune from Siddhivinayak Ginger says, “Government should promote cycling and should create an infrastructure suitable to pedal for all citizens. They can encourage the use of cycles by waiving off the taxes, offer subsidies to industries manufacturing bicycles and thus create a potential environment for cycling.” Prajkata Bopardikar & her husband Saurabh, residents of Roseland Residency shared that you can ride solo giving yourself time to process worries or concerns, or you can ride with a group which broadens your social circle. “It is high time government focuses on creating cycle friendly infrastructure,” she added. Abhijit Kupate, bicycle mayor of Pune rides 30 kms everyday from Nigdi to Baner for the last six years. He also runs an initiative called Cycle To Work wherein awareness initiatives are held for people to take up cycling. Ashik Jain, bicycle mayor of Pimpri Chinchwad informed 70 members from 31 countries in our Global Bicycle Mayor & Leader Network issued a joint call for local governments to adhere to a number of actions that champion active mobility.
