Bike Taxi Service Approved In Mumbai, Affordable & Fast Travel
Mumbai: In a major decision to tackle traffic congestion and increasing commuter issues, the Transport Ministry has approved bike taxi services in Mumbai. This move is expected to provide a faster and more affordable travel option for Mumbaikars. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik officially announced the launch of the service.
Key Features of the Bike Taxi Service:
- Fare: ₹3 per kilometer
- Mandatory GPS system in all bike taxis
- Helmets compulsory for both riders and passengers
- Operators must have a minimum of 50 two-wheelers to start the service
The bike taxis will have yellow number plates, and a distinct color will be designated for their vehicles. Additionally, drivers will need a special permit from the transport department, which will only be issued after police verification.
Special Arrangements for Women Passengers
To ensure women’s safety, the government has suggested appointing female bike riders for women passengers. A partition in the middle of the bike seat will also be mandatory for added security.
Bike Taxi Returns After Initial Opposition
Previously, Rapido introduced bike taxi services in Mumbai, similar to Ola and Uber, but they were shut down due to strong opposition from taxi and rickshaw unions. However, with the government’s new policy, the service is set to resume, saving both time and money for Mumbaikars.
