Blasting at Chandani Chowk in Pune causes panic among residents

Locals alleged that cracks developed in houses at Chandni Chowk due to blasting.

Pune: Local residents staying near Chandani Chowk in Pune have alleged damage caused to their houses due to the blasts conducted as part of the Chandani Chowk flyover project.

Many of the houses in the locality have been hit by the series of blasts conducted to break the rocks by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Several walls have developed cracks, prompting the residents to write to the concerned authority to look into matters on an urgent basis. Residents of La Valle Casa Housing Society had claimed that blasts conducted on January 13 and 14  also damaged a solar panel installed on the roof of their society.

Chairman, La Valle Casa Housing Society, Santosh Deshmukh said, “We have approached NHAI and conveyed all our problems, we have written a detailed letter to them on January 17. However there were no response from them.’’

Deshmukh further alleged that, midnight blasting activity creates disturbance for the local residents also it created cracks in our building. We have initiated a process of assessment of damage caused due to blasting activity.

Sanjay Kadam, National Highway Authority of India, Pune project director, said, “Blasting is necessary in this construction process, also we are taking proper precaution during the blasting process. Even after that, if anybody has complaint regarding same then we will look into this matter.’’

The District administration had decided to demolish Chandani Chowk Bridge after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde got stuck in traffic at Chandani Chowk in 2022.

Administration decided to construct a multi-deck flyover at Chandni Chowk that is expected to be completed in the second half of this year.
