Aadhaar is one of India’s most widely used identity documents, and most people are familiar with the standard white Aadhaar card, which is usually printed on paper and laminated for durability. However, in recent years, another type of Aadhaar card called the Blue Aadhaar has started attracting attention.

 Unlike what many might think, the Blue Aadhaar does not have any special features or extra identity information. Instead, it is specifically designed for a different category of citizens: young children. This article explains who can get a Blue Aadhaar, how it differs from the regular white Aadhaar, and the benefits it offers.

In India, there are currently two versions of the Aadhaar card. The main difference between the white and blue Aadhaar is in appearance and purpose. The white Aadhaar is the standard card issued to adults and older children, and it includes biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans.

 The Blue Aadhaar, on the other hand, is designed for children under the age of five and has a light blue background. It is officially recognized by UIDAI as a Child Aadhaar Card.

A key distinction is that the Blue Aadhaar does not include biometric information. Since a child’s fingerprints and iris patterns are constantly changing and not stable at this age, including biometrics is not practical. The Blue Aadhaar records only basic information such as:

Child’s photograph

Date of birth

Parents’ Aadhaar numbers

Once the child turns five, UIDAI requires a biometric update, converting the Blue Aadhaar into a standard Aadhaar. A second biometric update is required at the age of ten to ensure the Aadhaar remains accurate and reliable as the child grows.

The Blue Aadhaar can only be applied for by children under five years old. The application process is simple, but the parent must have an Aadhaar card to register their child. 

During registration, the child’s birth certificate is required, and their photograph is captured at the Aadhaar center while the remaining details are provided by the parent. Because biometrics are not included, the registration process is faster and more straightforward than that for a standard Aadhaar card.

Despite being issued for very young children, the Blue Aadhaar serves an important purpose. It acts as an official identity document for the child and helps with future school admissions and registration for government schemes.

 When the child reaches five, their Aadhaar is updated with biometric information, transforming it into a standard Aadhaar. Another biometric update occurs at age ten. In this way, the Blue Aadhaar functions as an initial identity card that grows with the child, ensuring they are officially recognized in government records from an early age.
