Pune – The long-awaited yard remodelling project at Pune Railway Station has moved a step closer to execution, with railway authorities finalising a comprehensive technical blueprint for the redevelopment. The first phase of the project is expected to commence between February and March next year, according to officials.

The project, which includes the modernisation of platforms and significant yard infrastructure upgrades, has been in discussion for several years. Due to the heavy influx of passengers during peak travel seasons—especially summer holidays—the railway administration had previously delayed the initiative to avoid inconvenience to commuters.

Tenders for multiple components of the project are set to be floated soon, marking a significant move toward transforming Pune’s primary railway hub.

Expansion Plans and Infrastructure Upgrades

As part of the station’s remodelling, two new platforms will be constructed, and the lengths of four existing platforms will be extended to accommodate longer trains. These changes are aimed at easing congestion and improving overall train handling capacity at Pune Junction.

“The Engineering Department of Indian Railways has finalised the technical blueprint, and tenders will soon be invited to fast-track the execution. Every effort will be made to minimise passenger inconvenience during the project,” a senior railway official said on condition of anonymity.

Alternative Terminals to Ease Commuter Disruption

To mitigate the impact on commuters during the redevelopment, the Railway Ministry has instructed timely completion of development works at Hadapsar and Khadki stations. These stations will serve as alternative terminals and will handle some of the diverted train operations during the remodelling phase.

Officials have acknowledged the likelihood of train cancellations and route diversions, which could affect thousands of passengers daily. Regular commuters have expressed mixed feelings about the development.

Commuter Voices Concerns Over Disruptions

Sunil Jadhav, a frequent traveller, shared his perspective: “The Pune Railway Station badly needs an upgrade, so I welcome the remodelling plan. But as a regular commuter, I’m concerned about how train cancellations or diversions will affect our schedules. Proper communication and planning are key to avoiding confusion.”
