BSNL Makes a Comeback: Government Allocates Rs.6,000 Crore, Partners with TATA to Boost Network Speed
In a significant move to strengthen BSNL’s network, the Indian government is allocating an additional ₹6,000 crore to the state-owned telecom company. This step comes in response to delays in BSNL’s 4G rollout and a shrinking subscriber base. BSNL is also gearing up for the launch of its 5G network, with trials having already been completed.
To accelerate BSNL’s growth, the government is taking various measures. In addition to the ₹6,000 crore investment, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is exploring further avenues to support BSNL’s expansion. The funding aims to expedite the 4G rollout, as the company has been losing ground in the competitive telecom market due to the delay.
The DoT is confident that this additional funding will fast-track the deployment of BSNL’s 4G network, which is expected to rely on a local technology stack. Reports suggest that the DoT will soon submit the proposal for approval by the Cabinet.
BSNL has been struggling to attract new subscribers, largely due to its pending 4G network launch. The company had earmarked ₹19,000 crore last year for advance purchases, which facilitated the installation of 100,000 4G sites. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and ITI Limited have been contracted to manufacture equipment for BSNL, with payments of ₹13,000 crore already made. An additional ₹6,000 crore payment is still pending.
To date, the government has invested ₹3.22 lakh crore in BSNL. With the new funding and partnerships, including collaboration with Tata, the aim is to significantly enhance internet speeds and improve services, positioning BSNL for a strong comeback in the Indian telecom market.
