Businesswomen, aide arrested over ‘smuggled gold’

Pune : A reputed businesswoman and her aide have been arrested over alleged gold smuggling.

According to a customs officer, who was unwilling to be named, “On Thursday evening, a businesswoman and a resident of Pune, returned home from Dubai. She had gone on a tourist visa. During interrogation, it was found that her bag contained gold jewellery in the form of bangles and gold chains. She initially told the officials that those were her jewellery that she had taken abroad to attend a function. However, it was found that the gold weighed 500 grams and was 24 carat gold. Such pure quality gold does not belong to the Indian market. As per the Indian market, the gold was valued at Rs. 26.45 lakhs.

The gold was seized from the passenger, and both the passenger and her aide who had come to receive her at the airport were arrested. under the provisions of the Customs Act.” Though the businesswoman had initially denied any wrongdoings, later she confessed to the crime.

Now investigation is underway to check if the duo had been carrying out similar activities in the past.
