Cancer Care Becomes More Affordable: GST Slashed on Medicines, Devices, and Insurance

Cancer treatment in India, often a financial nightmare for families, is set to become more affordable. The GST Council has approved sweeping tax cuts on life-saving medicines, medical devices, and insurance premiums—offering long-awaited relief to millions of patients. The reforms will take effect from September 22, 2025.

Key Reforms in GST for Cancer Treatment

  • Zero GST on 33 Essential Drugs: Chemotherapy medicines and drugs for rare diseases, previously taxed at 12%, will now be completely exempt from GST. For high-cost medicines priced up to ₹5 lakh, this translates into massive savings for patients.
  • Lower GST on Medical Devices: Diagnostic kits, infusion pumps, and other devices crucial to cancer care will now attract just 5% GST, down from 12–18%.
  • GST Waiver on Insurance Premiums: Health and life insurance, earlier taxed at 18%, will now be GST-free, making coverage more accessible and affordable for families.

Why It Matters

Cancer treatment isn’t just about drugs—it includes diagnostics, repeated hospital visits, chemotherapy cycles, and supportive care. These costs often run into lakhs, pushing middle- and lower-income families into debt or even forcing them to discontinue treatment. The GST cuts aim to reduce this burden and ensure that financial constraints don’t come in the way of life-saving care.

The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) welcomed the move, calling it a “next-generation reform” that improves both accessibility and affordability for patients battling cancer and chronic illnesses.

Drugs Covered Under the GST Cut

Several high-priced, patented medicines will now be cheaper, including:

  • Cancer treatments: Atezolizumab (multiple cancers), Pertuzumab (breast cancer), Brentuximab (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), Daratumumab (multiple myeloma), Avelumab (bladder and kidney cancer).
  • Rare disease therapies: Risdiplam for spinal muscular atrophy.
  • Other life-saving drugs: Inclisiran for lowering cholesterol.

The Bigger Picture

By cutting taxes on medicines, devices, and insurance, the government is addressing one of the biggest hurdles in India’s healthcare system: affordability. The reforms are expected to bring tangible relief to lakhs of patients and their families, while also encouraging wider adoption of insurance coverage to safeguard against future medical crises.
