CCTV Camera Maintenance Policy for Pune to Be Wrapped Up in One Month, States CM Fadnavis

Speeding Vehicles Endanger Pedestrians In Pune; Lack Of CCTV Hampers Investigation
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promised a comprehensive policy for CCTV camera maintenance in Pune and other cities within a month. This decision follows concerns raised by Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole during the state assembly session.
The chief minister mentioned, “We will decide if the responsibility falls on the police, the corporation, or another agency. Many CCTVs are not functioning at their full potential because of technical issues, creating a pressing need for proper maintenance. The comprehensive policy will clarify which agency will handle the maintenance.”
The maintenance of CCTV cameras in Pune has become a significant problem. Around 10,000 cameras, installed by various agencies including the police, the municipal corporation, and the Metro authorities, are facing upkeep challenges. Many of these cameras are reportedly not working, leaving potential security gaps throughout the city. This issue was raised in the state assembly by MLA Shirole, who highlighted the confusion surrounding the maintenance of CCTV cameras. This led to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis promising a comprehensive policy for CCTV camera maintenance in Pune and other cities within a month.
He stated, “There is confusion about who will take care of the maintenance of these CCTV cameras, and this could result in significant security concerns.”
MLA Shirole proposed a comprehensive solution for Pune’s CCTV maintenance issues. He suggested transferring the responsibility of all surveillance cameras to the police department, implementing a structured maintenance policy, and incorporating advanced technology for nighttime surveillance. He also advocated for integrating artificial intelligence into surveillance software and installing an additional 10,000 cameras to strengthen the city’s security infrastructure.
Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam responded positively to Shirole’s suggestions. He assured that standard operating procedures would be established for CCTV installation and confirmed that AI-enabled cameras would be installed in Pune.
Shirole mentioned that he was happy with the CM’s assurance to develop a thorough policy. Activist Mohit Mekhal added, “As crimes and traffic violations rise, it’s becoming more vital to have reliable CCTV footage to maintain an effective safety network. In several locations, crimes have been stopped thanks to the strong CCTV system in place.”
