Chikhaldara Glass Skywalk Deck Completed, Opening Expected By March
Asia’s longest glass skywalk moves closer to launch as key construction milestone is achieved in Melghat’s hill station.
The serene hill station of Chikhaldara, in the Amravati district of Maharashtra and known as the “Heaven of Vidarbha,” is set for a monumental tourism project. The construction of the main deck of the Chikhaldara Skywalk, billed as Asia’s longest skywalk, has been completed, bringing the landmark tourism project in Amravati district one step closer to its long-awaited opening. Authorities expect the skywalk to be ready for visitors by March, marking a major boost for tourism in the Melghat region and Vidarbha as a whole.
Located in the picturesque hill station of Chikhaldara, the skywalk stretches across deep valleys and forested terrain, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, cliffs, and dense greenery. The design of the skywalk involves connecting two prominent viewpoints: Goraghat Point and Hariken Point, linking the valleys and creating a spectacular viewing experience. Once opened, it is expected to become one of Maharashtra’s most prominent adventure tourism attractions and a major draw for both domestic and international tourists.
The project, which began in 2019, has faced several delays due to technical challenges, weather conditions, and interruptions during the pandemic period. Despite these setbacks, work has now gained momentum, with officials confirming that the most critical structural phase – the completion of the deck – has been successfully achieved. This deck forms the central walking platform on which visitors will experience the thrill of walking above the valley on a transparent glass surface.
The skywalk measures 407 metres in length, it is designed with a strong steel framework and high-strength glass panels that can bear heavy loads while maintaining safety standards. The structure allows tourists to walk over the gorge and observe the natural landscape beneath their feet, creating a unique and immersive experience.
The total cost of the project is approximately Rs 40.26 crore. Given its scale and design, the skywalk is considered one of the most ambitious tourism infrastructure projects undertaken in Vidarbha in recent years. Officials believe it will significantly enhance Chikhaldara’s position on the national tourism map.
Chikhaldara is already known for its cool climate, coffee plantations, wildlife, and proximity to the Melghat Tiger Reserve. Tourists visit the area to enjoy jungle safaris, scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and tranquil surroundings. The addition of the skywalk is expected to further strengthen the region’s appeal, especially among adventure enthusiasts and younger travellers looking for distinctive travel experiences.
With the deck now complete, the remaining work includes installation of glass panels, finishing of safety railings, final structural testing, landscaping around the site, and development of visitor facilities such as entry points, ticket counters, and safety management systems. Contractors are reportedly accelerating their efforts to meet the March deadline.
Officials have stated that the project is being closely monitored to ensure that construction quality and safety norms are strictly followed. Given the nature of the attraction, special attention is being paid to load testing, structural stability, and emergency response systems before opening it to the public.
Once operational, the skywalk is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for local residents. Jobs will be created in areas such as site maintenance, security, tourism services, transport, food stalls, and hospitality. The increased tourist footfall is also likely to benefit hotels, resorts, guides, and small businesses in and around Chikhaldara.
Tourism experts believe the skywalk could transform Chikhaldara into a year-round destination rather than a seasonal hill station. With proper promotion and infrastructure support, it has the potential to become a flagship attraction for Maharashtra tourism, similar to internationally famous glass bridges and skywalks.
The completion of the deck marks a symbolic turning point for the project. After years of anticipation, the skywalk is now visibly close to becoming a reality. For the people of Vidarbha, it represents not only a new tourist landmark but also an opportunity for regional economic growth and greater national recognition.
If construction progresses as planned, visitors can expect to step onto Asia’s longest skywalk as early as March, offering them a breathtaking walk above the valleys of Melghat and a new way to experience the natural beauty of Chikhaldara.
