Pune: The residents of Pimpri Chinchwad organized a protest against the increasing pollution in the Pavana, Mula, and Indrayani rivers, which are the lifeline of many villages in the valley including Pimpri Chinchwad city at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk in Pimpri recently. A large number of representatives of environmental organizations and citizens were present on this occasion.
As per information, polluted and chemical-filled water is illegally discharged into these rivers by companies. Also, polluted water from STP projects in housing societies and apartments in the area is discharged into the river. The sewage of the city is released directly into the rivers through drains without any treatment which makes the matter worse. Due to this, a layer of foam is seen floating on the surface of these rivers.
The protestors said that the polluted water released into rivers is adversely affecting many bio-diversities that depend on rivers including human life. Therefore, a case of culpable homicide should be filed against the individuals, organizations and related entities who committed such acts and the local administration working at the local level should be held responsible for this incident and a case should be registered against the organization and its head and appropriate action should be taken.
They further added that numerous complaints have been sent to the civic bodies but it has fallen on deaf ears. Biodiversity is under threat due to pollution destroying the chain of ecosystems in the rivers. If the citizens along with the state government, district administration, and municipal administration do not solve this issue, then the impact will be on the future of Pimpri Chinchwad city and alternatively on human life.
Thus, the protestors used placards to draw the attention of the administration towards this issue demanding a speedy resolution.
