Pune, along with several other cities across the country, is currently experiencing an unprecedented climate change, resulting in a surge of skin-related ailments. The combination of scorching heat waves, dry weather, and sudden thunderstorms with rainfall has contributed to these issues. It is crucial to understand the causes behind this phenomenon and explore effective strategies for coping with it.

The ongoing climate change has led to a rise in temperatures, creating an environment that is harsh on the skin. The excessive heat and dryness cause dehydration, leading to dry, itchy, and irritated skin. Furthermore, the sudden thunderstorms followed by rainfall disrupt the skin’s natural balance, making it more susceptible to infections and allergies.

Dr Nina Kanwaljit, consultant dermatologist from Sparsh Clinic, Wanowrie informed that patients are coming with issues like skin rashes, Miliaria and fungal infection. To solve these problems it is necessary to understand the root cause and also know our body well.

Home Remedies to Resolve Skin Issues :

1) We need to keep our skin hydrated .
2) Drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.
3) Wear clean and loose cotton clothing
4) Avoid excessive activity and stay in between 10 am to 5 pm if possible
5) Treatments :

b) Calamine  soothing lotions
c) Anti itch creams
d) If it gets Eczematous or infected kindly see your dermatologist.

To tackle these challenges, it is important to adopt preventive measures and prioritize skincare. Staying hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water is essential to maintain healthy skin. Additionally, using sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure can help shield the skin from harmful UV rays.

Proper moisturization is crucial during this climate. Choosing a moisturizer that suits your skin type and applying it regularly helps to combat dryness and maintain skin hydration. It is also advisable to avoid harsh soaps and opt for mild, gentle cleansers to cleanse the skin without stripping away essential moisture.

When it comes to treating skin rashes caused by sun-related damages, we can categorize them into two types: acute and chronic. If you experience itching, burning sensations, or redness, it’s best to consult a dermatologist who can provide topical creams, lotions, or oral tablets for instant relief, typically resolving the issue within 4-5 days. Chronic conditions may require specialized treatments such as laser therapy, tailored to address specific skin concerns.

Talking about the skin related issues due to extreme heat, Dr Kusumika Kanak, Consultant Dermatologist, Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Hadapsar said, ” “Protecting our skin from extreme heat is essential, especially during scorching temperatures like those experienced in Pune, where the mercury rises between 35-41 degrees Celsius. Even with sunscreen, the high UV index of 11 demands additional precautions. Regular application of sunscreen every 4-6 hours is a must, coupled with the use of goggles, broad-brimmed hats, and scarves to shield ourselves from the scorching sun.”

“To prevent sun-related problems, adopt a summer diet rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C. Enjoy citrus fruits like guavas, lemons or oranges, along with colourful vegetables. Stay hydrated with 6-8 glasses of water daily to keep your skin moisturized and avoid dehydration-related issues. Let’s prioritize our skin’s well-being and take proactive measures to beat the heat while embracing a healthy summer lifestyle,” Kanak added.

Regularly monitoring the weather forecast can aid in planning outdoor activities during cooler hours and seeking shelter during extreme heat or thunderstorms. Seeking medical advice from dermatologists or skincare professionals can provide valuable insights and personalized recommendations for managing specific skin concerns.

In conclusion, the unexpected climate change in Pune and other cities has given rise to various skin-related issues. By understanding the causes and adopting appropriate preventive measures, such as staying hydrated, using sunscreen, moisturizing, and seeking professional guidance, individuals can effectively cope with these challenges and maintain healthy, radiant skin even in adverse weather conditions.
