In a bid to prioritize road safety and encourage helmet usage, Pune district will observe “Symbolic Helmet Day” on May 24. As part of this initiative, all government and semi-government officials, as well as employees of corporations, municipal bodies, schools, colleges, and other institutions who travel on two-wheelers, are now required to wear helmets during their commute.

Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, the Collector of Pune District, made the announcement in response to the alarming rate of road accident-related fatalities in India. Currently, the country witnesses around 411 such fatalities every day, with nearly 80% of the victims comprising cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. Wearing a helmet significantly increases the chances of survival in a two-wheeler accident by up to 80%.

According to the Motor Vehicle Act, individuals aged four and above must wear helmets while riding a two-wheeler. This initiative aligns with the ongoing 7th UN Global Road Safety Week, which focuses on sustainable transport and is observed globally from May 15 to May 21. The objective of this week is to garner support from NGOs, government agencies, media, and citizens to strengthen road accident prevention efforts.

Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, along with directives issued by the High Court and the Supreme Court, mandates the use of helmets for both riders and pillion riders on two-wheelers in public places across India. In light of this, the designated “Symbolic Helmet Day” aims to raise public awareness during this week. It is emphasized that heads of offices must ensure that employees who commute on two-wheelers comply with the helmet rule. Failure to do so may result in penalties under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988.
