Cognizant Removes Logo from Social Media After Bombay HC Reinstates Trademark Ban
Court upholds injunction in Atyati Technologies’ lawsuit, orders expedited hearing on trademark dispute
NASDAQ-listed IT services giant Cognizant has removed its logo from all major social media platforms after the Bombay High Court reinstated an injunction barring its use in India. The move comes in the wake of a legal battle with Bengaluru-based fintech company Atyati Technologies, which alleges trademark infringement over similarities between its orange hexagonal honeycomb logo and Cognizant’s branding.
The decision, announced on August 26 by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep V. Marne, overturned a June 2024 single-judge order that had lifted the restraint. The bench restored the March 19, 2024, injunction preventing Cognizant from using the disputed logo until the court decides on Atyati’s interim plea.
“The order dated 19 March 2024 shall continue to operate during pendency of the interim application. The learned single judge is requested to expedite decision of the interim application and to make an endeavour to decide the same in an expeditious manner. With the above direction, the appeal is allowed,” the court said in its order.
In compliance, Cognizant has taken down its logo from LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and YouTube, displaying only its name. “We are complying with the Order of the Division Bench of the Bombay High Court while we consider our options for redress. Cognizant will pursue available legal remedies to defend its right,” a company spokesperson told a news agency.
Founded in 2007, Atyati Technologies employs over 1,400 people across 100 offices and provides fintech solutions enabling transactions worth nearly ₹3,000 crore every month. The company claims its logo has been in use since 2019, long before Cognizant adopted a similar design.
This legal setback adds to Cognizant’s ongoing disputes with rivals Wipro and Infosys over employee poaching and intellectual property. The firm previously settled cases involving former Wipro executives Jatin Dalal and Mohd Ehteshamul Haque. Meanwhile, a high-profile case with Infosys over alleged misuse of healthcare software trade secrets is pending before a Dallas court.
With nearly three-fourths of Cognizant’s 340,000 employees based in India, the injunction marks a rare instance of a Fortune 250 multinational facing restrictions on logo use in one of its largest markets.
