Container Overturns in Khandala Tunnel on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Traffic Diverted

An incident occurred today (Wednesday) around 11:15 am, causing significant traffic disruption on the Pune Mumbai Expressway. A large container overturned in the Khandala Tunnel at Khandala Ghat, impacting all three lanes. Regrettably, two individuals sustained injuries as a result of the accident, although no fatalities were reported.

The aftermath of the incident has led to a complete standstill in traffic towards Mumbai, necessitating diversions and alternative routes. Passengers traveling from Pune to Mumbai are currently unable to proceed due to the presence of the overturned container, which remains uncleared.

To mitigate congestion, light vehicles have been advised to reroute to Mumbai via the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway until the overturned container can be removed.

Highway Police have taken swift action to manage the situation. Traffic heading towards Mumbai has been redirected by the authorities from Valvan in Lonavala to the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway. The objective is to ease the flow of vehicles and provide viable alternatives to commuters.

Upon receiving information about the incident, personnel from Khandala Highway, Lonavla City Police, Devdoot Emergency Team, and IRB swiftly arrived at the scene. Collaborative efforts are underway to clear the accident site. A train has been mobilized to assist in the process of removing the overturned container.

While this unfortunate incident has disrupted traffic and caused inconvenience, the authorities are diligently working to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of all travelers.
