Controversy Over Use of 'Once More' in Marathi Poem from First Standard Balbharati Textbook
The inclusion of the English word “once more” in a Marathi poem titled “Janglat Tharli Maifal” from the first standard Balbharati textbook has become a topic of debate, sparking controversy.
The poem, featuring animals like monkeys, elephants, tigers, and wolves, has stirred controversy due to its occasional use of Hindi and English words such as ‘bat’, ‘roar’, and ‘once more’. Critics argue that even while teaching Marathi, the use of these languages could confuse young minds.

During a recent discussion, questions were raised regarding the selection process of such poems by the Balbharati committee. In one line of the poem, the phrase “once more, once more became a roar” particularly drew attention for its mix of languages.
The syllabus, designed to develop children’s imagination and cultural understanding, includes literature selected by the committee without any prior objections from language experts or educators between 2008 and 2024.
While there hasn’t been any recent critique on this poem, the creative incorporation of children’s imaginations and emotional world is noted.
