Covid-19 Cases Spike in Maharashtra: 53 Infections Reported in One Week
COVID-19 Cases Rise Slightly in Maharashtra; Mumbai, Pune District See Spike
Pune: Maharashtra has witnessed a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases this May, with the state health department reporting 80 new infections up sharply from just four cases in April. The majority of these cases have emerged from Mumbai, according to official data.
Between May 12 and May 18 alone, 53 new infections were recorded, marking the most significant weekly surge this year. Overall, Maharashtra has reported 87 Covid cases since January, with over 90% of them occurring this month. No Covid-related deaths have been reported so far.
The rise in cases has also pushed up the state’s Covid-19 positivity rate. While Maharashtra maintained a positivity rate of 1.1% throughout 2024, the rate jumped to 12% in May considerably higher than the 0.6% recorded in April. Out of 673 patients tested in May, 80 were found positive. Of these, 24 patients have already recovered.
All of the recent cases have been reported from Mumbai. The health department’s Monday bulletin confirmed that 53 Covid-positive individuals are currently under home isolation in the city.
Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Maharashtra Health Services, attributed the spike to changing weather conditions and potentially waning immunity. However, she emphasized that the situation is not alarming.
“This surge is sporadic and not worrisome at all. Covid is now endemic. The good news is that there have been no deaths or serious hospital admissions,” she said.
Meanwhile, regarding the possibility of reintroducing Covid screenings at airports, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said, “So far, we have not received any information or instructions from relevant authorities, including the Health Ministry.”
