Kerala breaks a new ground in the realm of digital entertainment with the impending launch of CSpace, India’s first government-backed Over-The-Top (OTT) platform.

The much-anticipated platform made its debut on Thursday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan officiated the launch at Kairali Theatre. Managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, CSpace aims to address the growing imbalances and challenges in the OTT sector concerning content selection and propagation.

Shaji N Karun, Chairman of KSFDC and noted film director, emphasized the platform’s unique positioning as a response to the evolving dynamics of the OTT industry. CSpace sets itself apart by presenting a curated blend of informative and entertaining content, offering a thoughtful selection process overseen by a curator panel comprising 60 members, including cultural luminaries such as Benyamin, OV Usha, Santhosh Sivan, Shyamaprasad, Sunny Joseph, and Jeo Baby.

The OTT platform’s distinguishing feature is its commitment to transparency in operations and revenue sharing.

CSpace operates on a pay-per-view model, enabling viewers to access a feature film for Rs 75 and shorter content at a reduced price. Crucially, half of the amount charged goes directly to the content provider.

KV Abdul Malik, Managing Director of KSFDC, highlighted CSpace’s response to concerns from exhibitors and distributors in the film industry, ensuring that only films released in cinema halls will be showcased on the platform.

This strategic decision aims to address the challenges posed by producers releasing feature films directly on other OTT platforms. The platform’s content, meticulously evaluated by the curator panel, includes 42 films in the first phase, comprising 35 feature films, six documentaries, and one short film. Films with national or state awards and those exhibited at major film festivals will also be featured.

As part of its broader mission, CSpace seeks to contribute to the welfare of film professionals, and plans are underway to allocate a certain amount for this purpose. The OTT platform, intending to promote Kerala’s culture and arts, will encourage film clubs across the state, including in colleges. Award-winning films like ‘Nishiddho’ and ‘B32 to 44’ are poised to premiere on CSpace, enhancing its diverse content offering.

CSpace is not merely confined to regional aspirations; it harbors global ambitions as well. The platform has engaged in discussions with both global and domestic carriers to offer its product, positioning itself as a last-mile connectivity provider that can coexist with other airlines.

The launch of CSpace represents a significant stride in Kerala’s cultural and cinematic landscape, and its innovative approach and commitment to quality content make it a promising entrant into the world of OTT platforms.
