Cybersecurity analysts alert WhatsApp users to holiday scams; recommend enabling two-step verification
Cybersecurity experts have sounded the alarm about a new scam on WhatsApp that targets users with Christmas-themed messages. Scammers are allegedly hacking into accounts by taking advantage of security weaknesses, leading experts to provide recommendations for protecting accounts.
In this scam, hackers send messages requesting users to share a six-digit verification code that appears on their screen. If the victim’s WhatsApp account does not have security features like “Two-Step Verification” enabled, scammers can easily take over the account.
Experts recommend activating “Two-Step Verification” for enhanced security. This feature can be turned on through the WhatsApp settings menu. Users should go to “Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification” and follow the instructions to create a secure PIN.
Furthermore, it is advisable for users to link an email to their WhatsApp account for recovery purposes in case of hacking. This can be done by accessing the “Settings” menu and selecting the option to link an email.
To improve safety, WhatsApp offers users the option to activate “Biometric Authentication” or “Pass-Key” access. This feature ensures that only the account owner can log into their account.
Cybersecurity experts stress the importance of not sharing personal information or verification codes with anyone, particularly with strangers. Users are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious messages to prevent becoming victims of scams.
