Struggling up six flights of stairs with a massive parcel, a delivery worker’s ordeal has caught the attention of netizens, raising serious questions about housing societies’ rules for lift access. The viral video shows the physical toll on workers who are denied the convenience of elevators, and it has ignited a heated discussion on fairness, empathy, and respect for essential workers.

The footage captures the delivery man slowly climbing to the sixth floor, the enormous package clearly weighing him down. At one point, he nearly loses his balance but keeps going, eventually reaching the assigned apartment. Even then, the struggle continues—the parcel barely fits through the flat’s entrance, causing him to stumble again. A voice in the background says, “Aaram se (Be careful).”

Shared on X (formerly Twitter), the post carried the caption: “Blocking delivery staff from using lifts is just untouchability in a new form.” The video has since generated a wide range of opinions, reflecting the ongoing debate about whether denying lift access is justified.

Some defended the societies’ policies, citing practical concerns. One comment noted, “The luggage is too big for the elevator door. It barely fit through the main door at the end. Don’t try to put your divisive caste b-t even in a thing called an elevator.” Another added, “They are being extra to ferry the load through stairs because some societies don’t have a service lift. And the main lift is too small/they don’t want to block it for guests. Seen this system in low-rise societies in Gurgaon. All high-rise societies allow delivery guys to use lifts.”

Maintenance and safety issues were also raised. A user wrote, “How is this untouchability? People who are posting these are definitely NOT owners of flats. They may be tenants. Moving heavy items in lifts leads to breakdowns, causing expensive repairs. What’s wrong in using stairs? One can always use 2-3 people instead of 1 to carry.”

Others expressed sympathy for the delivery worker, calling the restriction cruel. “That video is heartbreaking to watch. No one should have to suffer like that just to do their job. Empathy goes a long way,” one person commented. Another added, “Forget untouchability, it’s cruelty.” Some highlighted deeper social inequalities, stating, “Untouchability and caste will never go down!! This is the new age caste and untouchability system where gig workers and low-income people are seen as cheap people.”

Another user shared their perspective, “Totally agree. As an Interior Designer, it breaks my heart when builders denied to use the lift for materials. There should be some rule & regulations for workers as they are human, not machines.”
