Demand For New Power Substation In Pimpri Gains Momentum Amid Frequent Outages
Pimpri Chinchwad, April 167, 2026: A high-level meeting to address persistent power supply issues in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad was held at Prakash Bhavan on Senapati Bapat Road under the chairmanship of Minister Meghana Bordikar. During the meeting, MLA Amit Gorkhe raised key concerns affecting residents in Pimpri and surrounding areas.
Highlighting the growing electricity problems, Gorkhe emphasised the urgent need for a dedicated electrical substation for Pimpri city. Several areas including Sambhajinagar, Kalbhornagar, Vidyanagar, Dattanagar, Indiranagar, Shankarnagar, Morwadi, Akurdi, Pradhikaran, Pimpri Gaon, Dapodi, and Sant Tukaram Nagar have been facing frequent power outages in recent times.
Currently, these areas receive electricity from the Tata Telco substation, which also caters to distant regions such as Chakan, Anand, Jadhavwadi, and Chikhali. This has led to excessive load on a single substation, resulting in repeated disruptions in power supply.
To address these challenges, Gorkhe proposed a series of measures including increasing transformer capacity in high-load areas, installing safety fencing around transformers, replacing old and weak LT and HT cables, and upgrading damaged feeder pillars.
He also recommended shifting overhead power lines underground, relocating transformers from accident-prone zones, and setting up a new substation within the Pimpri Assembly constituency to ensure a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply.
Officials acknowledged that residents are facing significant inconvenience due to recurring outages. Gorkhe reiterated that establishing a new electrical substation remains the most effective long-term solution to improve power reliability in the region.
