Demand To Withdraw World Heritage Status For Koyna and Kaas Plateau
In a recent statement, plant scientist Dr. Madhukar Bachulkar from Kolhapur expressed his frustration over the potential environmental impact of the upcoming Mahabaleshwar project. He highlighted concerns over illegal land acquisitions by wealthy individuals, excessive deforestation, and the government’s neglect of environmental issues. Dr. Bachulkar, who was one of the experts involved in the initial study for the World Heritage status of Koyna and Kas Plateau, has announced plans to request UNESCO to revoke the World Heritage status for these sites.
According to a report in Lokmat, Dr. Bachulkar criticized the state government’s lack of commitment to preserving the environment, wildlife, and biodiversity. He noted that the government’s indifference towards protecting these natural treasures was evident. He stated that if the government does not prioritize maintaining the international recognition of these sites, he will formally request UNESCO to withdraw the World Heritage status.
The state government is planning a new tourism project in the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, and Kas Plateau area. Dr. Bachulkar warned that this project could lead to the destruction of biodiversity and have detrimental effects on local wildlife and the environment.
He pointed out that many rich individuals have bought land in the area and are engaged in illegal deforestation, but the forest department and the government have failed to take action.
Dr. Bachulkar accused the government of focusing solely on revenue generation, neglecting environmental preservation.
