Pune: At just 16 years old, Dhruv Khivansara exemplifies the rare blend of academic excellence and athletic prowess. With a remarkable 94% score in the ICSE 10th standard boards, Dhruv’s achievements in both academics and sports make him a standout student. His recent successes include not only excelling in the classroom but also securing a position to represent at the national level in karate.

Dhruv’s commitment to Karate is demonstrated by his recent accomplishments. On July 24, he clinched a Gold Medal with an impressive 7-0 victory in the Under-17 Boys Karate Championship at the Regional Level of the ‘CISCE Games & Sports 2024’ which was held at N.L. Dalmia High School in Mumbai. He is now preparing to compete in the National Karate Championship in Jhansi this September.

Managing such a demanding schedule requires impeccable time management skills. Dhruv attributes his success to a well-structured routine. “I allocate specific times for studying and dedicate the remaining hours to sports and hobbies. One month before my boards, I focused intensely on studies, but I had set smaller goals leading up to that” he explains. Social media, often a distraction for many teenagers, was another area where Dhruv showed remarkable self-discipline. “A month before my exams, I deactivated all social media accounts except WhatsApp. I used group calls with friends to stay connected without getting distracted,” he shares.

Despite his academic and athletic achievements, Dhruv remains grounded. When asked about how it feels to be both an academic topper and a karate champion, he responded, “It feels great. And I’m happy that I’ve made my parents proud. They’re happy. I believe in keeping it simple and not getting too much into the flow because it can get you into overconfidence. That’s an important thing I’ve learned from Karate. Because I remember when I had my first fight, I won my first round and then I got overconfident and badly lost the second round. So that is a very important thing that you shouldn’t get overconfident and overwhelmed by your achievements”

He finds solace and inspiration in history, particularly the World War eras and the Indian freedom struggle. “Studying history, especially World War II and India’s independence, sparked my interest in geopolitical issues,” he notes. This passion has led him to participate in Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, where he represents Saudi Arabia and ideates how to tackle global issues like the Sudan crisis.

Dhruv’s love for karate started at a young age. “I began practicing karate when I was in first or second standard, so it has been a part of my life for nearly a decade,” he recalls. He is currently a black belt, Dan 1, working towards Dan 2. His journey has not been without challenges, but his approach to overcoming them reflects his maturity. “Sometimes, after a long day, I feel too tired to train. I allow myself a break when needed, but I always get back to it,” he explains.

In addition to karate, Dhruv enjoys baking and playing cricket, he represented his school at the state level in Cricket as well. He also finds time for video games, which he believes help clear his mind and maintain a balanced lifestyle. “I play video games occasionally to relax and connect with friends,” he says.

Looking ahead, Dhruv is focused on his current studies but remains open to future possibilities. Regarding his future academic interests, he mentioned, “As of now, if you ask me, I am interested in the aeronautical field. And I just want to do something about it, most probably. But I haven’t decided as of now what I want to do. Right now, I’m just focusing on my studies. And when the right time comes to decide what I have to do, I’ll do it at that time.”

He profoundly further added, “Because I believe that if I don’t do what I’m doing right now properly, I won’t be able to do what I have to do in the future. So I’d rather sincerely do what I’m doing right now with focus without taking a lot of tension.”

Dhruv’s support system includes his parents, friends, and his karate instructor, Vijay Golani. “My biggest role model in Karate is my Coach. He has been with me throughout my journey, whenever I do something wrong, he’ll properly explain it to me. And he understands when he needs to be harsh and when to take it softer on me” he praises. Dhruv also draws strength from his spiritual beliefs, often seeking guidance from his Guru during challenging times.

With over 20 years of experience in Karate, Vijay Golani has been instrumental in shaping Dhruv’s journey. Head of the Shito Ryu Karate School of Pune, Golani has observed Dhruv’s progress from a young age, noting his exceptional discipline and commitment. According to Golani, Dhruv’s adherence to training schedules and his willingness to participate in various tournaments have been key to his development. “Dhruv has always been dedicated, never shying away from a challenge,” Golani shares. His coach highlights how Karate not only enhances physical fitness but also instills discipline and focus, qualities that Dhruv carries into his academic pursuits. Golani’s philosophy emphasizes hard work and confidence, principles that resonate deeply with Dhruv’s approach to balancing his rigorous studies with his Karate training.

Dhruv Khivansara’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication and balance. His commitment to both academics and karate demonstrates a rare combination of discipline, passion, and perseverance. As he continues to excel in both his studies and sports, he sets a powerful example for his peers and serves as an inspiration for all striving to balance multiple passions and responsibilities.
