September 4, 2024
Pune Metro has set a remarkable standard by achieving 70% of its ticket sales through digital means, leaving just 30% of passengers opting for cash transactions.
This shift underscores Pune Metro’s dedication to technology and sustainability, as digital ticketing greatly minimizes paper consumption, aligning with the metro’s environmentally friendly goals.
In August 2024, Pune Metro saw a significant 20% rise in daily ridership, with the average number of passengers reaching 118,241. This increase has resulted in a revenue surge of ₹5.69 crore for the month, averaging ₹18.68 lakh in daily income.
The route from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi has played a crucial role in this growth, attracting more passengers since it began operations. On this route, 71% of the total passengers travel, while the remaining 29% utilize the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to District Court route.
The distribution of digital ticketing methods shows that 20% of tickets were bought through digital kiosks located at metro stations, 6% from ticket vending machines, 18.8% via WhatsApp, 9.17% using the mobile app, and 13% with the MahaMetro card.
Shravan Hardikar, the Managing Director of MahaMetro, expressed his happiness with the increasing ridership and the widespread use of digital ticketing. He remarked, “The over 20% increase in daily passengers in August 2024 is a positive development for Pune’s public transport system. The fact that over 70% of our tickets are being sold digitally showcases the environmental consciousness of Pune’s residents. This is a remarkable achievement and a model for the entire country.”
