In Pimpri Chinchwad, it has come under observation that several politicians have ventured into the construction industry to capitalize on Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) acquired through Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).

Ten out of 12 SRA projects have been approved to be implemented throughout the city and are currently under progress. But it is noted that every project appears to be mired in some political controversy with the opposing party obstructing the work by putting in opposing views. As Pimpri Chinchwad is considered as a smart city, efforts are being made to resolve these disputes. With growing urbanization, it has become difficult for the slums to have decent homes. To solve this issue, both State and Central Government has initiated schemes with the aim to eliminate slums and reduce increasing Urban poverty.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) recently gave approval to 25 SRA’s out of which one of the projects has been undertaken by a politician working in construction industry due to which the locals staying nearby will have to temporarily relocate themselves.

One said,” During a search for alternative relocation sites, it was proposed to relocate the residents to a vacant plot owned by Hindustan Antibiotics, a Central Government Entity. However, the plan faced opposition from another leader, who has shown interest in the SRA business, citing concerns over maintaining the area’s cleanliness with a firm stance of ‘no slums in our areas.’ “

Merely, a few political figures have collected TDR from the recipients of Slum Rehabilitation Program and other urban initiatives throughout the city and created a TDR Bank, whereas some are disrupting the process and causing hinderance in the progress leading to economic disputes.
