Dosa Turns Deadly in Ahemdabad? Two Children Die After Eating Store-Bought Batter, Mystery Deepens
Ahmedabad tragedy raises serious questions as two sisters die and parents land in hospital after suspected food poisoning
A shocking incident from Ahmedabad has left both authorities and citizens alarmed after two young sisters died and their parents were hospitalised following a meal made from store-bought dosa batter.
The incident took place in the Chandkheda area, where a family of four reportedly fell ill shortly after consuming dosas prepared using ready-made batter, commonly known as khiru.
What Happened That Night
According to family members, around 3 kg of dosa batter was brought home from a nearby dairy on April 1. The family consumed dosas that night, but by the next morning, all four members began experiencing severe vomiting and discomfort.
The situation quickly turned critical.
The three-month-old infant died during treatment after reportedly suffering convulsions, while the four-year-old child also passed away soon after her condition worsened. The parents are currently undergoing treatment.
Why This Case Is Puzzling Investigators
While the family suspects food poisoning, officials have not confirmed the exact cause yet.
A major question troubling investigators is the infant’s death. Since the baby was not consuming solid food, authorities are exploring whether other factors may have contributed to the illness.
Forensic teams have collected samples from the house as well as the dairy where the batter was purchased. The final cause will be determined only after laboratory reports are released.
Dairy Owner Denies Any Link
The dairy owner has denied that the batter was responsible for the deaths.
He stated that the same batch was sold to multiple customers and no other complaints were reported. Officials also noted that a large portion of the batter purchased by the family remained unused.
What Is Khiru And Why It Can Be Risky
Khiru is a fermented batter made from rice and urad dal, commonly used for preparing dishes like dosa and idli.
Since it undergoes fermentation, improper storage, contamination, or unhygienic handling can make it unsafe—especially in hot weather conditions.
Safety Concerns Around Ready-Made Food
Experts warn that ready-to-use batter, if not stored properly or left exposed, can spoil quickly and lead to serious health risks.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of food hygiene, especially during summer months when bacterial growth is faster.
Investigation Still Underway
Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities yet and are waiting for detailed forensic reports.
Until then, the exact cause of this tragic incident remains unclear, leaving behind grieving questions for the family and concern for the public.
