Amid India’s nationwide celebration of the nine-day-long Navratri festival, West Bengal faces potential disruption as Cyclone Hamoon brews over the Bay of Bengal, posing a risk of heavy rainfall. The Weather Channel predicts that Cyclone Hamoon will intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, then track north-northeastward, crossing the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong on Wednesday. Throughout its path, the cyclone is expected to bring rainfall to eastern Indian states, including West Bengal and Odisha, coinciding with the final days of Navratri.

The latest forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) suggests that coastal districts in Odisha and West Bengal may experience moderate showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. The northeastern states are also likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days, with light to moderate rainfall, including isolated heavy rainfall, in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, south Assam, and Meghalaya until Thursday, October 26.

In response to the weather conditions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch for major districts in West Bengal, such as Howrah and Hoogly, on Tuesday. This wet weather poses potential disruptions to Durga Puja celebrations in the state.

In addition to the rainfall predictions, the IMD has issued warnings to fishermen, advising them not to venture into the sea along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts until October 25 due to strong winds and ‘rough to very rough’ sea conditions.
