Cancelling train tickets through IRCTC has never been easier! Whether you booked your ticket at a counter or online, IRCTC provides a seamless process for cancellations.

“IRCTC aims to make ticket cancellations convenient for passengers,” says a spokesperson. “Our online platform simplifies the process, ensuring a hassle-free experience.”

Here’s how you can cancel counter tickets online through the IRCTC website:

Step 1:

Visit the IRCTC website, go to the train section, and select “Cancel Ticket” followed by the “Counter Ticket” option.

Step 2:

Enter necessary details like the PNR number, train number, and captcha. Confirm your understanding by ticking the relevant box and clicking submit.

Step 3:

Upon submission, an OTP (one-time password) will be sent to the mobile number provided during booking.

Step 4:

Enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number to confirm the cancellation request.

Step 5:

Review the displayed PNR details, and revenue information, and proceed by clicking “Cancel Ticket” for complete cancellation. The total refund amount will be indicated.

Step 6:

After cancellation, you’ll receive an SMS containing the PNR number and refund details on your registered mobile number.

IRCTC rules for counter ticket cancellation:

  • Ensure to provide a valid mobile number during booking for cancellation.
  • Cancellation is permitted up to 4 hours before scheduled departure for fully confirmed tickets.
  • For RAC and waitlist tickets, cancellation is allowed up to 30 minutes before departure.
  • Passengers who have booked a train ticket are eligible for a full refund in case the train gets cancelled by PRS within three days of the scheduled departure. 
  • To cancel an e-ticket, passengers can do it online via the internet. For counter tickets, passengers can cancel them through the IRCTC website or by contacting railway inquiry at 139 or sending an SMS.

Cancellation processing time typically takes 3 to 7 working days for refunds. With IRCTC, cancelling train tickets is quick and straightforward, ensuring a smooth journey for all passengers.
