Dr. Gill, a physician in Canada specializing in immunology and pediatrics, faced legal troubles after speaking out against government-imposed lockdowns and vaccination mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her stance led to lawsuits from medical bodies and censorship by previous management of Twitter, now known as X.

Facing a hefty legal bill of CAD 300,000 (approximately ₹1.84 crore), Dr. Gill launched a crowdfunding campaign for support. Upon learning of her situation, Elon Musk pledged to assist, with X agreeing to cover the remaining expenses.

Elon Musk’s company has announced it will cover the legal fees of an Indian-origin doctor, Kulvinder Kaur Gill, amounting to nearly ₹2 crore.

The legal battle has drained Dr. Gill’s savings, leaving her with significant debt. She has been a vocal critic of vaccinations, often expressing her views on X. Her posts have faced criticism from the medical community and mainstream media.

In response to defamation against her, Dr. Gill sued several individuals and news outlets. However, her lawsuit was dismissed by a judge citing anti-SLAPP laws, which aim to prevent lawsuits designed to silence public criticism. Dr. Gill was then instructed to cover the defendants’ legal expenses.
