Tesla is actively exploring opportunities to establish an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in India, and recent reports indicate that Maharashtra is emerging as the frontrunner for this initiative, as highlighted by The Economic Times (ET).

The company has begun discussions with state officials while assessing various potential sites for its proposed manufacturing facility. This increased focus on Maharashtra follows a recent meeting between Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States, where Musk reportedly advocated for incentives such as lower import duties on EVs to facilitate Tesla’s entry into the Indian market. According to the report, Maharashtra stands out as Tesla’s preferred choice, particularly due to the company’s existing office in Pune and the presence of several suppliers in the state, which enhances its appeal as a hub for expansion.

To attract Tesla, the Maharashtra government has suggested locations near Chakan and Chikhali, both situated close to Pune, as reported by an official. Chakan is recognized as a key automobile manufacturing hub, home to major companies like Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Volkswagen, and Bajaj Auto.

While Maharashtra is currently at the forefront of this initiative, state officials have indicated that discussions are ongoing and no final agreement has been reached yet. Tesla is reportedly considering logistical aspects, such as port accessibility, before making a commitment to a specific location.

Even though Maharashtra is leading the competition, other states are also vying for the opportunity to host Tesla’s plant. The ultimate decision may hinge on the incentive packages that different states offer, according to the report. Given that Maharashtra has previously lost significant investments, like the Tata-Airbus aircraft project, to competing states, the government is adopting a more strategic approach in its negotiations with Tesla.

Following Musk’s interaction with Modi, Tesla has posted 13 job listings on LinkedIn, indicating its increasing interest in entering the Indian market. The job openings, based in Mumbai and Delhi, encompass various roles in sales, vehicle service, customer support, and business operations.

Tesla Hiring Plans:

Tesla is looking to fill positions such as Service Advisor, Parts Advisor, Tesla Advisor, Customer Support Supervisor, and Delivery Operations Specialist, according to the company’s Careers Page. The company’s plans to enter India had been stalled since 2019 due to high import taxes on electric vehicles. Previously, India imposed a 60% import tax on EVs priced at $40,000 or less, and a staggering 100% on those priced above that threshold.

In 2022, Musk expressed his desire to launch cars in India but highlighted that the country’s import duties on EVs were the highest in the world. However, there is a positive shift as the government has recently reduced the import tax on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from nearly 110% to 70%, which may pave the way for Tesla’s entry into the Indian market.
