Expiry Date On Eggs Made Mandatory From April 1 To Ensure Food Safety
Uttar Pradesh, March 17, 2026: In a move aimed at improving food safety standards, the state government has directed all egg producers to mark eggs with the date they were laid as well as their expiry date starting April 1.
According to the new order, eggs that do not carry this information will either be destroyed or labelled as unfit for human consumption.
The decision has been taken to raise awareness about egg freshness and protect public health. Officials noted that eggs remain safe to eat for up to two weeks when stored at around 30°C. However, if kept under refrigeration between 2°C and 8°C, their shelf life can extend to nearly five weeks.
Authorities also pointed out infrastructure limitations in the state. Currently, there are only two dedicated egg cold storage facilities, located in Agra and Jhansi. Experts say eggs cannot be stored alongside vegetables due to differing temperature requirements.
Officials from the Food Safety and Drug Administration observed that existing guidelines were often not followed, and many consumers remained unaware of proper storage practices. Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Dairy, said the new rule is intended to ensure better compliance and informed consumption.
