The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) heralds the transformative impact of FASTag on the electronic toll collection system in India, citing an impressive penetration rate of around 98 percent and a user base exceeding 8 crores. FASTag has emerged as a game-changer, streamlining toll operations and significantly contributing to the ease of travel for users on national highways.

A pivotal initiative in this realm is the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ program. This strategic move aims to amplify the efficiency of toll operations, marking a paradigm shift in how toll collection is managed across the nation. The essence of the initiative lies in each vehicle being equipped with a dedicated FASTag, ensuring a standardized and expedited toll collection process.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision of leveraging technology to enhance the efficiency of transportation systems.

FASTag, as a cornerstone of this vision, has proven instrumental in curbing bottlenecks associated with traditional toll collection methods. The widespread adoption of FASTag has not only brought efficiency but also transparency to toll operations, ensuring a smoother passage for commuters on the vast network of national highways.

To support this, NHAI has urged FASTag users to complete the ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) process for their latest FASTag, following Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

The KYC process is an important step in onboarding for various services including FASTag applications.

This process helps entities identify and verify their customers, ensuring secure transactions. If there are changes in your KYC details, updating them promptly is essential.

It’s important to note that FASTags with sufficient balance but incomplete KYC will be deactivated or blacklisted by banks after January 31. Additionally, NHAI stated that FASTags with valid balance but with incomplete KYC will get deactivated/blacklisted by banks post-January 31, 2024.

Apart from this, the statement also highlighted that FASTags are sometimes deliberately not fixed on the windscreen of the vehicle, resulting in unnecessary delays at the toll plazas and causing inconvenience.

To avoid facing issues, users must ensure KYC completion for their most recent FASTag and adhere to the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ guideline. They should dispose of any old FASTags through their banks and only the latest FASTag accounts will remain active. For assistance, users can contact toll plazas or use the toll-free customer care number provided by their issuer banks.

FASTag users can reach out to the nearest toll plazas or toll-free customer care numbers of their respective issuer banks.

To comply with FASTag KYC requirements, you can use any of the following documents as per RBI guidelines:

1. Passport

2. Driving license

3. Voter’s ID

4. PAN card

5. Aadhaar

6. NREGA job card (signed by a State Government official)

Also, include a copy of your vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) along with these KYC documents.

As the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative gains momentum, it underscores the commitment of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to harness innovative solutions for optimizing the country’s transportation infrastructure.

By integrating technology seamlessly into toll collection, the initiative contributes to the overarching goal of creating a robust and future-ready road network in India.
