Pune: The Fergusson College authorities have started charging collecting a ‘fee’ from the walkers using their campus. The rule to collect money from the public who use the campus for their morning or evening walks has come into effect from July 16.

Though the management has their reasons, the rule has evoked mixed response from the walkers.

Walkers will be given a pass after submitting a copy of their Aadhar card and two passport size photos.

As per the notice placed at the gates of Fergusson college, anyone who is coming for a walk will have to pay Rs 100 for a month, Rs 500 for six months and Rs 900 for a year. Walkers will be given a pass after submitting a copy of their Aadhar card and two passport size photos.

Mahesh Athavale, vice-chairman of the Deccan Education Society said, “The decision has been taken for security purposes. We felt the need to upgrade the security system inside the campus to avoid theft.  The pass system will do good for the students and staff members staying inside the campus. Some people use the campus for consuming alcohol. The amount collected by issuing passes will be utilised for maintaining the campus better.  Security staff members have been told to increase security standards.”

“It is a very good decision by the authorities as it will stop miscreants from entering the campus.  I have noticed many youngsters, who are not students of Fergusson college,   coming to the campus in the morning causing inconvenience to senior citizens,” said Fatima Shaikh, who is a regular walker at Fergusson college road.

Rucha Nizampurkar who goes for a walk with her daughters said, “Instead of charging money they should have increased security at the gates. Gate no 2 is left unguarded most of the time. Not everyone can pay. College authorities should have spared a thought for such people too.”Show quoted text
